Driven by the desire to provide a platform for resource sharing and community engagement, Tengyuan Design embarked on the creation of the 'We Share Micro Nest'. This project is the first of its kind in the country, aiming to build city furniture for citizens to share. The design team hopes that this innovative 'city plug-in' will encourage public participation and foster a sense of responsibility towards their communities, thereby invigorating the district's spiritual vitality.
The 'We Share Micro Nest' project consists of two main components: the Reading House and the Rest Station. The Reading House, with its rotating square wooden frame, creates a unique interior space and a visually striking exterior. On the other hand, the Rest Station, based on a cube, features maintenance door panels that can be opened to the inside and outside, offering a rich visual and environmental experience with its colorful aluminum plate.
The Reading House covers an area of about 23.9 square meters with a building area of 16.8 square meters and a height of 4.3 meters. The Rest Station, designed for sanitation workers, covers an area of about 81.5 square meters with a building area of 7.87 square meters and a height of 2.85 meters. These structures are not just functional but also serve as behavioral memory points, stimulating new interactions and connections within the community.
The project, which started in January 2018 and was completed in July 2018 in Qingdao, represents a shift from rapid incremental growth to slow stock development in many cities. This bottom-up approach to urban renewal, using urban plug-ins to activate the area, builds an open platform and achieves public urban design consensus. The design team faced the challenge of unifying structure and exterior styling, ensuring safety and practicability under various external harsh weather conditions.
The 'We Share Micro Nest' project is more than just a design initiative. It's a social statement, a call for sharing and respect within the community. It's about transforming abandoned spaces into areas of shelter and engagement, sparking a love for reading, and spreading warmth and beauty. This innovative approach to urban renewal has not gone unnoticed. The project was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020, a testament to its exceptional design and significant impact on the world.
